Before You Say "Good-Bye"

Last week, we had to say goodbye to our son’s dog, Doug. He was only four. Doug literally went from being absolutely fine one moment, to down and out the next. Cancer took another dog angel last week… and this experience has prompted me to share something important with you. Here are some things that I wish every pet owner knew….. Fortunately, we were prepared. Are you?

  1. Have a plan. Set aside emergency funds for a pet emergency. Yes, really. A major surgery can cost close to $5000 at many emergency clinics. At the very least, take advantage of a credit line such as “Care Credit”, so you have it if you ever have a pet medical crisis. Make sure your vet and your local emergency clinic take Care Credit if that’s the route you choose to take.

  2. Collect DNA samples NOW. We love Perpetua. http://perpetuadnajewels.com/ This is not a paid endorsement, but their products are amazing. A cheek swab or blood sample gives them the best DNA sample. Why not do it now, while your pet is living and healthy? When we face the crisis of saying goodbye, things like this are so easy to forget….

  3. Make two paw prints. Using black non-toxic ink, make a good print on an index card. Use polymer clay to make the other, and bake it. If you would someday like a tattoo of your pet’s paw print, check with your local ink artist to find out what they require.

  4. Have a photo session with your pet. Take the time and have a professional capture you and your pet together. Do it now, while you have the opportunity.

  5. Have a plan, write it down, and then put it away. Cremation or burial? Who will handle the remains? Make sure you check your local ordinances, which often prohibit the burial of animal remains.

  6. Inquire about in home services. Fewer and fewer pets are crossing to the rainbow bridge without veterinary assistance. Will your veterinarian come to your home to euthanize your pet?

  7. Include your pet in your final wishes. Make sure you are very clear in your will what your wishes are for your pets if you would pass before them. Line up a pet guardian, and make it legal. Really. What would happen to your pets if you were in a debilitating accident? Take care of it now, and then put it away.

  8. Microchip your pet, and keep the information updated. If your life companion is ever stolen, or would escape, a microchip is an undisputable method of ID. This becomes important in identifying animals who have been hit, in some cases. Microchipping is basically peace of mind.

  9. Invest in GPS technology that your dog wears. Gates get left open, large birds carry off small dogs, and some unattended dogs wander. GPS technology can help prevent death if your dog is found quickly enough. Likewise, the technology can also aide in recovery of your pet, and provide priceless closure.

  10. Enjoy every.single.day. You never know, such as in our case, when your pet will have to say goodbye. Do the best for them that you can- the best food, fun, and love. In that way, you will have no regrets.
